As Dodger fans wanted Manny, and it is obvious that the Dodgers needed him, a scary thought went through my mind. If the deal is a multi-year deal will he produce? Now you may be thinking “of course!” But wait, and look at this through a different context. Manny did great with the last half of the baseball season. He wanted a major contract! Of course he was going to work his butt off and carry this team into the playoffs. He wanted to show the baseball world that he is a superstar deserving of 100+ million dollars. Now he has a two year deal, where the second year is a player option. Most critics say he will opt out. That would mean he would have to try again to carry this team, and be the ‘Mannywood’ Manny we all love and know so well. But what if he counts on that second year? What if he takes it easy for the first year and doesn’t try that hard? Sure he would still seem like a star, but not that amazing star we saw dawning #99 for the first time in 2008. The second year would bring him just about as much money as the first year of the contract. He could then be ‘Mannywood’ Manny and play his hardest for the second year, carrying the Dodgers and justifying the money he would get that offseason. I hope this doesn’t come to fruition, and only is a random scary thought in my mind.
