USC just took on Washington State in the Colosseum. USC basically shut out the Cougars. The Cougars only score came with 22 seconds left in the game. Unlike the previous games, I have no criticisms of the Trojans for this game. Jeremy Bates, the offensive coordinator, did a much better job. He kept Barkley in check, but allowed him to throw deep. The Trojans primarily ran the ball. Barkley threw the ball 23 times and the Trojan Running Backs ran the ball 29 times among eight different runners. Barkley managed the game well. Previously I stated that Barkley should only look to manage the game, by throwing maybe 15-17 balls, but he proved tonight that he could do a bit more. He threw the ball 23 times and completed 13 passes for 248 yards and 2 TDs. Not a great completion percentage, but keep in mind this is from an injured Matt Barkley. He really proved his worth, as did the RBs.
As an interesting side note, Aaron Corp made an appearance. He only really handed the ball off. He tried to run the ball once, and when he did he fumbled. So much for my theory of him being ok if he were allowed to run more. I actually feel bad for Corp as I think he could be an effective QB but his confidence is probably at an all-time low.
I was discussing USC with Darth via text messages today, and this game really proved to me USC can still be a very effective team this year. The real test will be next week against a very angry Cal team (they were upset bad by Oregon University). With all the upsets this year, USC still has a shot at going to the title game. The #5, 6, and 9 teams all lost today. They only need Florida or Texas to lose one game, and I think that will happen to one of those teams, probably Florida. I would still put my money on the Trojans being able to beat Mississippi, Alabama, Boise State, and maybe LSU. To me USC has a 3-point shot to try and make it. I think Mississippi, Alabama and Boise State will lose a game for sure. LSU seems to be pretty good, along with Florida and Texas. However, again with all the upsets happening, I think a lot of underdog teams are going to have heightened confidence when they face an undefeated Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Boise State, or LSU.
I still can't believe I am looking this deeply into a team that I only follow because they are consistently in the news. GO BLUE!!! (They won today against Indiana University in a squeaker. Our savior Tate Forcier got injured bad and ended up throwing the late TD pass to Martaveous Odoms with 2:2x left on the clock. Like Barkley, Tate Forcier is a warrior - for lack of a better term).
